October is a month filled with important reminders. From shining a light on breast cancer to encouraging honest conversations about mental health, it is a time that calls us to pause, reflect and look out for one another. At Breastfeeding Buddy, these causes resonate deeply with our community of parents.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among Australian women, with 1 in 7 likely to be diagnosed in their lifetime. While many risk factors are out of our control, there are protective factors we can lean into. Research has shown that breastfeeding may reduce a woman’s risk of developing breast cancer later in life, particularly with longer durations of breastfeeding.
It is thought that the changes which occur in cells of the breast during a full-term pregnancy or breastfeeding may make the cells less likely to become cancerous. This may explain why women who have had children or have breastfed have reduced breast cancer risk.
This cause is especially close to our hearts, as our founder Claire has a family member currently navigating breast cancer. It is a reminder of how important awareness, research and support truly are.
If you would like to get involved or learn more about how to support Breast Cancer Awareness Month, you can visit the National Breast Cancer Foundation for ways to donate, fundraise and spread awareness.

World Mental Health Day
October 10 marks World Mental Health Day, a chance to reflect on the reality that mental health affects us all. For new mothers, this conversation is especially important. Postpartum depression and anxiety can affect anyone, regardless of background or circumstance, and it is often hidden behind a brave smile.
Support for maternal mental health needs to be practical as well as compassionate. Here are a few tangible ways friends and families can help:
-
Encourage rest: Offer to watch the baby so mum can nap or take a break.
-
Share the load: Simple tasks like cooking a meal, folding laundry or doing the grocery run can relieve daily pressure.
-
Ask twice: A gentle “How are you really doing?” can open space for honesty.
-
Know the signs: If persistent sadness, withdrawal or anxiety is present, encourage reaching out to a GP, maternal health nurse or counsellor.
At Breastfeeding Buddy, our mission extends beyond physical comfort. The Buddy is designed to support mums practically, but our broader commitment is to normalising the ups and downs of early parenthood and helping families feel less alone.

Celebrating Our First US Stockist
Amidst these reflections, we are also celebrating a new milestone. We are thrilled to welcome Bloom and Grow Lactation, founded by Leigh Campbell, as our very first US stockist. Based in St. Louis, Bloom and Grow provides lactation support services and resources to families navigating their feeding journeys.
Having The Buddy available through such a trusted and compassionate partner is an exciting step forward, allowing us to support even more families globally.

October reminds us of the threads that connect us. The importance of awareness, the strength found in support, and the joy of new beginnings. Whether you are reflecting on health, reaching out to a friend, or simply finding comfort in the small wins of daily life, know that you are not alone.
